What is Wide Area Network (WAN) & What Are The Wide Area Network (WAN) Devices ?

Intersects multiple local area networks (LANs). A LAN is usually a collection of computers and network devices that are associated with each other from a comparatively short geographical distance. In a company or business, a WAN can consist of influences to the company's headquarters, branches, deployment facilities, cloud services, and other facilities. Usually, a router or other multifunction device is used to connect the LAN to the WAN. An initiative WAN allows users to share access to centrally located applications, services, and other properties.  This needs to removes & install the same application server, firewall, or other resources in multiple locations, for example.

The WAN is not restricted to the same geographic location as the LAN. LANs can be configured in any number of geographic areas and connected to WAN devices. In other words, the WAN is not restricted to a specific location.

There are network devices specially designed for LAN interconnection. The configuration, installation, and maintenance of this device require the experience of an expert engineer in the administration of your organization's network. These devices are specific to WAN environments and include:

Modems

With a modem, you can send digital data through analog media while sending and receiving
information.

Voice band modems convert digital signals (1 and 0) generated by a computer into voice frequencies that can be transmitted through analog lines in the telephone network. On the other side of the connection, another modem converts the sound into a digital signal for input to a computer or network connection.

CSU/DSU

A channel service unit/data service unit CSU / DSU is a combination of equipment used for line clock and frame synchronization monitoring. It also detects errors in the physical layer. This can be called a kind of modem.

Access server

Centralize user input and output communications. Access servers can have a combination of analog and digital interfaces, which support hundreds of concurrent users.

WAN Switch

Multiport interconnection devices used in operator networks. These devices usually change traffic as ATM and operate at the data link layer of the OSI reference model. Switched public telephone network switches can also be used in the cloud for circuit switching connections, such as the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and analog telephone access.

 Router

The router provides WAN access interface ports that are used to interconnect LAN networks and connect to service provider networks. These interfaces are serial connections or other WAN interfaces. Some types of WAN interfaces require external devices such as DSU / CSU and modems (analog, cable, DSL) to connect the router to the local presence point (POP) of the service provider.

Core Router

A router in the center or the WAN backbone, not the WAN. To fulfill this function, the router must be able to support the highest speed communication interfaces in use in the WAN core and all those interfaces must be able to forward IP packets at full speed. The router must also support the routing protocol used in the kernel.
