What is IT Monitoring & How IT Monitoring Works?


IT Monitoring is the procedure of collecting metrics about the hardware and software conduct of an IT situation to ensure that everything works as expected to support applications and services.

Basic monitoring is performed through device status checks, while more advanced IT monitoring provides detailed operational status, such as average response time, number of application instances, error and request rates, use of the CPU and application availability. 

IT monitoring consists of a broad class of products designed to help analysts determine if the IT team is online and operates at the expected service levels while solving the problems detected. IT monitoring tools range from basic checks to more sophisticated tools that allow you to deepen product performance and automate repairs if you suspect a problem. When used on a web server, IT monitoring tools can analyze trends in CPU and RAM usage, determine if hard disk space is running out and determine how often the system has been locked in the last year.

IT monitoring, including network monitoring and application monitoring, has evolved dramatically since 2010 to address the complexity of the IT environment. In particular, IT monitoring tools can now monitor both local and cloud-based systems. And with the hundreds of surveillance products and tools available in the market, surveillance systems vary greatly, each with different complexity and approach. Therefore, a perfect IT monitoring tool or software for one company may not be suitable for another company.

IT monitoring covers three sections called Foundation, Software and Interpretation.

Foundation: Infrastructure is the lowest layer of the software stack and contains physical or virtual devices, such as servers, CPUs and virtual machines.

Software: This part, sometimes called the monitoring section, analyzes what is running on the underlying device, such as CPU utilization, load, memory and running VM count.

Interpretation: Collected metrics are often displayed as graphs or data boxes on GUI panels.

IT monitoring may or may not depend on the agent. Agents are independent programs that are installed on monitored devices to collect performance data from hardware or software and report them to the management server. Agentless monitoring uses existing communication protocols to emulate agents with many of the same characteristics.

For example, an IT administrator installs an agent on a server to monitor server usage. The management server receives the agent data and displays it to the user through the IT monitoring software interface. It is often shown as a graph of performance over time. If the server stops working as expected, the tool alerts the administrator. Administrators can repair, update or replace items until they meet the operational criteria.
